On December 6th, Finland will celebrate its 108th Independence Day. Finland became an autonomic part of Imperial Russia after Russia captured the eastern third of Sweden 1809. Finland, an integral part of Sweden since the Middle Ages, was granted its own parliament in 1906. Already in the first elections 1907 all men and women had the right to vote and stand for elections. 10 years later, on 6 December 1917, Finland declared its independence. Today, with the on-going European war, standing united for a resilient Finland and Europe, as well as for our energy sovereignty, is more contemporary than ever.

Over 80% of the Finnish household energy consumption is genererated by heating of space and water. Moreover, district heating has been the source for ca. 50% of greenhouse emissions until now. With our customers, we’re building a more sustainable environment for the next generations by cutting the emissions as well as the main cost for housing here in the edge of the northern hemisphere. At the same time, we’re notably increasing Finland’s energy sovereignty, since 20% of all energy consumption in Finland is generated by accommodation – 66% of it by heating and 16% by heating water.

The first commercial smart heating project was completed in Finland 2015: 10 years later, our work was recognised by the European Heat Pump Association as we won the annual Heat Pump Award in the DecarBuilding category. The award was given for the most innovative and sustainable heat pump solution with scalability. – With soon 170 smart hybrid heating systems in place, we’ve cut and replaced the need for district heating by some 185 000 MWh: This is about the same need for district heating that a building such as the DecarBuilding winner, Veijarivuorenpuisto, would need in 200 years.

The smart heating solutions utilizing waste heat recovery and renewable energy sources, such as geothermal heat, are already used by Smart Heating’s international customers in Finland – and maybe outside Finland some day soon. “In addition to our strongholds – sisu (the extraordinary Finnish determination), sauna (smart Finnish heating since post Ice Ages) and sustainable heating & cooling technology –, we have a 4th strength, our shareholders”, says the founding partner and CEO, Mr. Pertti Nissilä. “30% of Smart Heating was acquired 2022 by the Finnish, family-owned Halton Group that is a true global technology leader in demanding indoor air solutions. Halton already have a staff or 1,900 in 9 countries”, adds Mr. Nissilä.

Happy Independence Day, Finland! We will keep up the work for a more sustainable Finland – with our 100% Finnish owners, know-how and workforce.
